Opera playing in the movie Philidelphia?

Can anyone tell me what this beautiful piece was? It was the scene in which Tom Hanks emotionally describes the story line of the opera as it's playing in the background. I'm pretty sure he mentioned what it was called, but I can't remember.

Opera playing in the movie Philidelphia?windows vista

Here is the quote:

Andrew Beckett: Do you like opera?

Joe Miller: I'm not that familiar with opera.

Andrew Beckett: This is my favorite aria. This is Maria Callas. This is "Andrea Chenier", Umberto Giordano. This is Madeleine. She's saying how during the French Revolution, a mob set fire to her house, and her mother died... saving her. "Look, the place that cradled me is burning." Can you hear the heartache in her voice? Can you feel it, Joe? In come the strings, and it changes everything. The music fills with a hope, and that'll change again. Listen... listen..."I bring sorrow to those who love me." Oh, that single cello! "It was during this sorrow that love came to me." A voice filled with harmony. It says, "Live still, I am life. Heaven is in your eyes. Is everything around you just the blood and mud? I am divine. I am oblivion. I am the god... that comes down from the heavens, and makes of the Earth a heaven. I am love!... I am love."

oprah because it is more popular and has better stuff than tyra banks show
i vote tyra. although of course i love oprah to...who doesn't. but it seems that oprah's shows are getting a bit boring and talking about thing i'm not interested in like getting your kids ready for school and stuff....i'm 17 i don't have any kids i need to get myself in school! but tyra she's more fun, she has more celebrity interviews and her show interests me more. that's kinda like what oprah was like back in the day....minus the craziness!
tyra

but oprah is great to
Well, I guess I would pick tyra, but only because opera's show bores me. I used to pretty reguarly watch tyra, but I think shes a little to over the top. Out of all talk shows... I pick Ellen lol
Like Oprah for a while, but think its time she retired...she looks bored to death half the time...shes a gazillionaire anyway....
Oprah of course
I say the big Oprah
Oprah is geared towards women with families...while Tyra is geared towards the younger generation.

I like Tyra coz I can get tips about makeup, fashion etc.
i luv oprah and besides tyra trys to fit in with the normal ppl to hard..she is f-ing rich...so why does she claim to have done all these things that us normal ppl do...did you see the show last week on fraud items beforeal when do you think the last time she bought a fake purse or clothes or a diamond......she is to much.....

Opera addons?

Are there any opera addons like mcafee siteadvisor or trend protect (very useful tools for firefox and IE which tells you which sites can harm your pc)???

Opera addons?web browser

You don't need to be afraid of going to any website, IF you would have a great anti-virus that monitors your computer Like Norton or Kaspersky ( Kaspersky is better and so light on your computer ).

But if you are so much afraid about your surfing throw the net, I think Gooooooooogle is a good anti- virus! I mean if you wanna go to a site and you don't know that is it harmful for your computer or not, you can search about in Google. Because if any website would be dangerous for your computer in Google search results, and you would click on it, Google will warm you, that this website is dangerous Do you wanna go in?

I think its not an option that your web browser should have, It should be an option that your anti-virus should have. And Firefox is the BEST!

I'm not afraid of going to any website Cuz I've got the Best anti-virus (Kaspersky).

Possibly it is a function of the file, or the download site that doesn't allow the download to save at any points other than 0% and 100%, in an effort to keep the file from working in file-sharing networks like Limewire.

I don't know the file, and a search doesn't bring it up in Yahoo, so I can't check the terms. But I suggest I have made a reasonable assumption.

Here in Germany, the "la Donna e mobile" is used for two different commercials. One is a type of crispy cookie, known as Choco Crossies, where the text has been changed. In the other, a frozen pizza commercial, the original is used a s background music for a "romantic " dinner for two, featuring

There's a script you can use to do spellchecking. This script is called OSpell. Alterntively, you can use a third party application called Aspell to check for you. This program is integrated into the right-click menu of Opera.

Ballet, but I love both of them..
ballet. i never been to an opera.

Ballet... I love dancing and watching people express and act through dance. It is truly an art. Plus - beautiful costumes and Body grace :-)
Ballet as it is far more interesting! Though.... certain operas contain quite some ballet
opera.
Opera. They are both crap but i could sit at the opera and make funny noises and try to put off the singers.
can i say neither??? if i had to choose i guess ballet

Opera anyone?

My husband and I will be going to our first opera next Friday. I am very excited. Has anyone been before, what kind of experience did you have and what should we look forward to? Thanks so much.

Opera anyone?microsoft windows

Opera is for the masses, not the just the elite, so dress comfortably and enjoy yourself. Come with an open mind (and maybe binoculars if you are far from the stage!) and try to put aside an preconceived notions of operas and opera singers.

Opera is all about telling stories through what Wagner called "Gesamtkunstwerk" which basically means "all of the arts" There is really nowhere else you will find acting, singing, possibly dance, instrumentalists, make-up, stage design/construction, lighting, art, etc... all together. It is really a culmination of the arts.

Just have fun! And people watch while you're at it!

Opera anyone?windows media player 10 internet explorer

it will either be boring or moving.

depends on your taste in music and what opera you will be seeing. :D
My parents used to take me as a kid, so I got used to it early. Then didn't have the opportunity for a long time and for the last 10 yrs, I've made it a habit to go to the Met in NYC once a year to see a good performance of either an opera or an operetta.

I think your experience will depend on the type of opera you'll be seing, the stage production, etc. I've seen some ultra modern interpretations of classical themes or traditional settings and found the performance horrible. Other people thought it was interesting... so the bottom line is, the experience will be unique to you. It can go either way. If it turns out that you don't like this particular performance, then choose a different opera and go again. Some are clearly easier to digest than others, esp on the first visit.

Have fun! and enjoy. :-)
you will be either thoroughly entranced or terribly bored depending on your personal tastes ... research the opera so you know the plot (you don't want to be missing any stage action or emotion by reading the surtitles) and do not judge all operas by one performance ... its like TV, stage plays or movies you can't tell if you like the genre by one viewing or performance
Get there early and read the program notes so you will know the plot !!!

Opera I want to know more?

I want to learn more about opera.

I am listening to a bit of Sarah Brightman and like it.

Where do I go from here?

Opera I want to know more?microsoft project

Try light hearted operas like madame butterfly

Opera I want to know more?microsoft powerpoint internet explorer

Go to Classical Music Archives. It's operated by a team of musicologists who can provide you with a wide range of suggestions to your quest.

Enjoy !
Tune your radio in to Classic FM. You will hear plenty of opera there - and other good music that you might grow to like, too.
Italian is said to be the language of opera but I much prefer the German composers. Wagner and Richard Strauss are my preferred composers of opera but Wikipedia will list the most popular composers and a further search will allow you to play some opera extracts.

Good Luck.
Start with the websites of the big opera companies, like www.metopera.com for the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. They will give you synopses ( the stories, condensed) and libretti ( all the words, with an English translation).

Every Saturday, during the opera *season*, you can find the Met opera on FM radio - try the National Public Radio station (FM) in your city. There are also interesting panel discussions during the intermission, and Opera Quiz - experts, etc.

Sarah Brightman could not hold her own in any good opera company - just WAIT until you hear some of the really top voices! Get yourself a CD of Renee Fleming or Deborah Voigt, if you like sopranos; Neil Shicoff if you like tenors; Thomas Hampson if you like baritones; and I like old recordings of Samuel Ramey for bass. There are countless others - past and present - who will thrill you like nobody else can!

Get yourself to a live performance by a really good professional company - like the Met - and get comfy, because you are gonna be in that seat a LONG time - maybe 3 hours. But - the new Pirates movies is 2 hours and 45 minutes long, too - and there is no intermission in a movie!

Welcome to a thrilling world - I am amazed that more people have not discovered it - it has it ALL, and of the best quality.
It is better to start with popular selections from opera rather than tackle a full opera all at once. You will find many selections on i-tunes. Some suggestions for starters:

la ci darem la mano (Mozart from Don Giovanni)

di quel amor (Verdi from La Traviata)

la donne e mobile (Verdi from Rigoletto)

un bel di (Puccini from Madame Butterfly)

cara nome (Verdi from Rigoletto)

my heart at thy sweet voice (Saint-Saens from Samson %26amp; Delilah)

habanera and toreador song (Bizet from Carmen)

je crois entendre encore (Bizet from The Pearl Fishers)

largo al factotem (Rossini from the Barber of Seville)

una furtiva lagrima (Donizetti from The Elixir of Love)

I could go on. When you are ready to tackle a full opera, I suggest I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo. It is a short opera, very melodic and very dramatic, very easy to like. Get a low-priced CD of it, and listen to it, but don't read the synopsis or the libretto (if one comes with the CD). Learn the music first. Then attend a live performance (if possible) or get a DVD with subtitles. You will hear the familiar music in it real context and it will be amazing.
Go get (try your local public library for a free listen) "The Ultimate Opera Collection," a CD with 18 assorted tracks. It covers many operas and many composers from the 18th century to the early 20th.

It is almost all very easy for the opera novice to listen to, and includes some famous tunes that you probably know and never knew they were from operas, such as the Habanera from "Carmen" and the Soldiers' Chorus from "Faust."

The artists include some of the great names in opera - Placido Domingo, Marilyn Horne, Jose Carreras, Kiri te Kanawa, etc.

Great music, great performances. Enjoy.
get a collection of opera arias and choruses for listening ... but since you like Sarah Brightman I recommend seeking out recordings of Natalie Dessay a true operatic coloratura (very high soprano) there is a wide variety of operas so listen to as many different kinds as you can like Orfeo ed eurydice, a ,ore popular Mozart opera, Bellini or Donizetti, The Barber of Seville, a popular Verdi opera, an operetta, a R Strauss opera a short Wagner opera like Flying Dutchman.. also there is the French style operas like Manon and Lakme .... there is so much take your time and don't over saturate yourself
if you live in the nyc area, definitely go to the Met. The season is up now, but in the fall, it'll be on again. Start with basic operas like Mozart (Die Zauberflote, Le Nozze de Figaro, Abduction Seraglio, Don Giovanni) and then work your way up to the romantic operas of Verdi, and Puccini. If you want juicy romantic Italian opera, go for Puccini's La Boheme, or Madame Butterfly. The Metropolitan Opera in New York City tends to be a little more sophisticated than others, so if that's not in your cards, go for the New York City Opera. It's a little less high tech. Good luck and enjoy!
Try Angela Gheorghiu, Pavarotti, Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa or perhaps look at CDs with collections of opera arias by Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and so on.

http://opera.stanford.edu/

Good site for some history etc.

http://www.operastuff.com/Opera_Singers/

Gives information on singers etc.

Or just go to a library for a dictionary on music or opera, and browse through. Try googling it as well.
Buy an opera selection of various performers. They are eveywhere but do not include Sarah Brightman. However, if you like sopranos I would suggest you start with the cheapos of those who are dead or retired. You don't get any better than Callas, Joan Sutherland, Rene Fleming etc.

They will all be there if you get a collection.
Definitely try the Metropolitan Opera website (www.metopera.org) They are one of the best opera companies in the US. Sometimes they have radio coverage of the operas. Also, keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to see operas at IMAX theatres, only a few actually run operas, but its worth it to look. You can also try to rent operas on DVD through netflix, or buy them on ebay.

Good luck!!
As was said in "Pretty Woman" You can learn to like and appreciate opera, but loving it is part of your soul. Some is so beautiful it tears your heart out by the roots. If it does this, you are hooked and will never get eouugh.

P.S. Pretty Woman is not a chick flick.
Start with any of the Gilbert %26amp; Sullivan operetta's(Pirates of Penzance/ HMS Pinafore / Yeoman of the Guard are all marvelous) then Puccinis Madame Butterfly , Mozart is wonderful %26amp; didn't write a bad opera! Don Giovanni %26amp; magic

flute are reccomended%26gt;
I started getting into opera by going onto sites like wikipedia and www.metoperafamily.org and looking up the plots of different operas. Have a look through some of them and choose one or two that you like the sound of. I find that if I like the story, I like the music.

You can buy "highlights" discs of operas which aren't full recordings of operas but take the main arias (songs) and ensembles (group pieces) from a full recording.

I started off with Puccini's Turandot which was a bit of a baptism by fire, so I would recommend Verdi to start off with if you want realistic passion, drama and emotion, or Rossini or Mozart if you want light-hearted comedy and "florid" singing.

The styles of singing are different in earlier opera like Rossini and Mozart where quality of singing and sound, as well as technical ability to sing difficult and impressive, florid passages was emphasized, sometimes to the detriment of the dramatic intensity and emotional expression of the situation.

In Verdi's operas, the earlier operas still required the florid singing, but more emphasis was put on the drama and emotion, and the singers had to be able to act more. There was no need for vocal agility on the part of singers in Verdi's later operas however.

It really depends on your tastes. For technically impressive singing, catchy tunes and light storylines that are all really good fun go for something like The Barber of Seville or The Italian in Algiers by Rossini. If you want more drama and passion then Verdi's Aida would be your best bet. These are only my suggestions but if you find other operas by the same composers that you like the sound of plot-wise, by all means go for them instead...these are just personal favourites of mine that I feel would be more accessible to someone just starting out in opera.

I enjoy both styles so I would say look into both styles, both "comic" and "serious," and then make a choice as to which you prefer...you might surprise yourself. If you find you like Verdi more, you should eventually move out to include Puccini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo and eventually Wagner (which is quite an acquired taste :-D ).

If however you find yourself tending more towards lighter opera from Mozart and Rossini, you should eventually branch out to listen to Donizetti, Bellini and Delibes.

If you can, get a copy of the words (the libretto) in the original language and in English, follow along when you first listen to an aria...it helps you know what the person is singing about, and I found it increased my enjoyment of that and subsequent playings.

Btw when I say you "should" move out to, it's only my opinion, but these composers are similar in style to the other "introductory" ones.

Hope this helps! And good luck!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=I8A61eY1Efg http://youtube.com/watch?v=T7RZ4ws46-s http://youtube.com/watch?v=bQ7_972jwcI here are the oldies of opera.if you want to know more about opera you have to listen of old one also.best wishes ,from reiki.
You should start with something not as heavy as Puccini,Verdi or Wagner. Try with Mozart, Die zauberflaute it鈥瞫 excellent, also Donizetti, or any italian before 1850. Greetings from Argentina!

Opera - Regency Era?

During the Regency Era, when did people most attend Operas? Or did they just attend during the Season. And which was the most famous opera house? How much did it cost around...1815?

Opera - Regency Era?microsoft updates

Opera - hugely popular form of entertainment for the Regency upper classes. Though some operas were German and a handful were in English, the prevailing form was the Italian. The typical Regency person’s education included learning at least some Italian in order to enjoy this quintessentially civilized art form. The main place to see/hear opera in London was the King’s Theatre, also known as the Royal Italian Opera House. A season subscription for an opera box could cost as much as £2,500. (Contrast this with the annual salary of Jane Austen’s clergyman father, approximately £150/year, or a private in the army, at just under £18/year.) “The doors opened at six and performances began at seven.” (Hendrickson, Emily. The Regency Reference Book, p. 24.)

The ton would have gone during the Season, to see and be seen, and perhaps gone for supper at the Piazza afterwards.

Opera - Regency Era?windows server 2003 internet explorerThank you! Report It

You're right in guessing that the most often attended period was the London Season. The London Season coincided with the sitting of Parliament, and began some time after Christmas, running until lat summer (July/August), when it became too hot, and wealthy city inhabitants took to their Summer homes in the countryside, or on vacations on the continent. They would return by late November, in time for Christmas and the start of the new Season.

The most famous opera house was (and still is) undoubtedly the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. It's competitor, and almost as equally famous and important is the Theatre Royal at Drury Lane.

Theatre admissions were roughly four shillings for the box seats, two for seats in the pit, and one for the gallery.

Hope this helps,

Peace!

A nice, practical gift for opera goers is a libretto, so that you know what the text is before you get to the opera house. Makes for better enjoyment, knowing what's going on in the text, instead of just guessing or just listening to the music.

( Of course, a lot of opera houses have sur-titles so you can twist your neck to read along, but it's still better to have an idea before you get there)

And even if they are performing Magic Flute in English, it's still a good idea: vowels can take on funny sounds when they are being sung up high, and a lot of words can go missing....it's jsut part of the physics of singing high.
If you're picking her up from home, taking some flowers would be nice. If you're meeting her there, don't bother as there may not be anywhere to leave them during the performance.

Make sure you buy her a programme at the theatre!
What a delightful idea! I suggest something related to the opera that you are to see. Try http://www.metoperafamily.org/shop

I wish I could name this, but I will tell you of some similar pieces. Carl Orff wrote Carmina Burana, and Catulli Carmina, that have very similar sounds. It sounds like a hybrid of this and the Lion King.. Also in this vein is the soundtrack from 1492.
Keep checking back on the YouTube site. Someone has already asked the name of the theme music; maybe someone will answer.

Opera web browser?

How do you set up how much space you want for the cache/temporary internet files for opera?

Opera web browser?microsoft live

This is how you set up how much disk cache you want to set in Opera:

In Opera, click on Tools-%26gt; Preferences (or press ctrl+F12 or Alt+p) -%26gt; Advanced (tab). In the Advanced tab, click on History in the left pane . Now on the right you'll see an entry by the name of Disk cache . Select how much 'space' you want to have for the disk cache from this dropdown. And finally hit OK

Similarily , you can also set the memory cache you want in the same 'History' section. The default setting is automatic which means Opera dynamically assigns the memory cache to be used, and this can be upto 10% of your memory. The more the memory cache available, the faster will be the back and forward button browsing speed for instance. However, it can slow down the system in general. I suggest you leave this setting at 'automatic' because Opera manages its memory cache quite well.

But for some reason If you don't want Opera to dynamically assign the memory cache to be used(like if u have lesser RAM), change from the Memory cache dropdown in the History section as to how much memory cache you want Opera to use. IF your on 256 MB RAM, consider changing to value to 4MB , if on 512 MB keep the value at 4 MB or 10 MB and so on...

that's it :)

Question for working opera singers (singers who make their primary form of income by singing opera)?

There are so many I know who have desired to sing opera professionally. Many are talented, and work hard, yet haven't been blessed to manifest their dream. Do you feel that there comes an age when it would be recommended to stop trying, and just 'get a real job?' What advice would you give to someone who wishes to sing professionally?

Question for working opera singers (singers who make their primary form of income by singing opera)?windows mobile

Opera News did a great article on the topic of age discrimination in opera. I have noticed that if you are a "late bloomer" or someone who got into singing opera after the age of 30, then it is next to impossible to break into the field. Most apprenticeship programs and B and C opera companies use age 30-32 as a cut-off. (Of course A companies won't even consider you unless you're a big name star.) Also, if you haven't reach a certain degree of professional notoriety by the time you are 40 then you should begin thinking about another path. Years ago, I decided not to limit myself to opera so I started branching out into musical theatre, voice over work (jingles, animation, studio work, etc) and doing my own thing with public recitals and concerts. Now that I'm at the big 40, I always have work and don't have to worry about dealing with the unspoken prejudice against older singers.

Metal came from Opera??

I'm in a debate with my friend about metal and it's origins. Being an opera fan but very much not a metal fan, leaves him to attempting to convert me by telling me that metal comes from opera, therefore I should like it. Is this true? And if it is or is not, can you maybe find some proof so that I can print it out and show him. (I'd like to win the bet :)

Metal came from Opera??windows mail

Heavy Metal has its origins in blues, not opera. The proto-Metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath all started out playing a lot of bluesy songs, which progressively got heavier and heavier. The next generation of Metal bands, Rainbow, Dio or Iron Maiden, emphasized melodic riffs. This was also the time of Metal guitar virtuosos which often took inspiration from classical music (Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker etc...).

In the 80's, Metal split into many radically different branches: Thrash, Black Metal, Power Metal etc... But it was also the time when Progressive Rock became heavier and heavier and some of it fused itself with Metal, in bands such as Queensryche or Dream Theater.

In the 90's, the variety of Metal genres exploded, and created a whole bunch of bands which openly tried to fuse Power Metal, Progressive Rock and Classical Music (including Opera), such as Blind Guardian or Nightwish. They're sometimes called Symphonic or Epic Metal, and are predominantly found in Europe.

Metal came from Opera??microsoft maps internet explorer

Some metal is very dramatic.. and use alot of theatrics live for show/shock value.. I would see more of a resemblance to theater than Opera.. although some of the falsetto notes used in metal.. definitely have origins in Opera..
being a musician, i have learned that all modern music is basically derived from classical music [for many long reasons].
This is leaning towards the direction you're looking at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo-Classic...

I'd say metal is about the contrast of loudness/noise to silence - classical music (or really all music) revolves around tension and release. The romantic era of music (1800ish) was very focused on the loud vs quiet, and 20th century classical music is often more about rhythm than pitch. Look at a piece like "The Rite of Spring" by Stravinsky - the loud/heavy part would be awesome as a cover by a metal band :)
that seems interesting, but im not sure if its true
The closest thing I can think of rock being close to opera would be Judas Priest. If I recall the lead singer comes from an operatic background.
Classical music has always been a major influence on Metal, particularly in Europe.

There are several metal singers who have operatic training, and there have even been a few Heavy Metal operas (Virgin Steele's 'House of Atreus" for example)

If you like opera, then there is much in some genres that should appeal to you (but not the most commercially available metal); Metal did not "come from" opera though--that's a gross oversimplification and misleading to say the least.

Normally into Musical Theatre, but want to give Opera a try. Any Suggestions?

I absolutely adore musical theatre, and it is what i plan to do in my life, but my voice teacher and i have discovered i have an amazing dramatic soprano voice, and along with all my belt song, head voice, mixed, upbeat, and ballads, he's now adding a Opera category to my repetory. He wants me to go out and find good Opera songs for a High Legit Soprano, or even for Altos (Considering that's what I am in musical theatre). Promblem is is I have NO idea about any operas, infact the only thing/songs I know about opera are the things/ones handed to my from my choir teacher.

So any suggestions for good Opera songs for a female, doesn't matter voice part.

Normally into Musical Theatre, but want to give Opera a try. Any Suggestions?microsoft net

I will agree with some of the advice here, and disagree with some. Taking things slowly in opera is more than correct. If your teacher thinks you should expand into the operatic repertoire, then tells you to find your own music, you might want to find another teacher. Three years' experience does not a singer make, and you've not studied the rep. The books mentioned by these other very obviously knowledgeable people are excellent sources. Your teacher should be finding things that will bring you slowly around to the rep. I would have to disagree with the Puccini over Mozart issue. Verismo opera takes a trained depth that a singer of only three years would not have, in my opinion (not so humble, I've been told). Mozart composed for the soprano voice. It was his favorite. For vocal health, sing Mozart and Handel. Each of these composers require concentration on technique (not to say others don't require that, but I think the other posters here would know what I mean). Talk with your voice teacher about getting input from another teacher. I know the problems that go on with vocal politics between the studios of different teachers, but if your teacher is a good one, he won't mind having someone else listen and perhaps make suggestions regarding repertoire. I don't know how old you are, but taking care of your instrument is SO important. Don't take any chances with rep that doesn't suit you, or is too heavy for so early in your vocal career. I do wish you luck in your vocal endeavors, and toi, toi, toi!

Normally into Musical Theatre, but want to give Opera a try. Any Suggestions?microsoft flight simulator internet explorer

Well, it wouldn't hurt you to try and it will expand the depth of your voice. Your voice may be too 'legit' for musicals, that's what's happened to me in the past. I have done both and that's not a bad thing. You have to know that High Legit and Dramatic Soprano are 2 very different things so when you're thinking repertoire you have to think dramatic soprano and even some lyric roles.

No dramatic soprano began by singing dramatic soprano arias. Sounds like you have a little bit of an overly zealous voice teacher. You don't want to sing any vocal part either as that can be damaging. Dramatic roles are enormous and depending on your age and it seems lack of experience I wouldn't start there as you can hurt yourself very badly.

I would start with Mimi's arias from La Boheme (they require a larger soprano voice) Si, Mi Chiamano Mimi is a good one to start with. Ach Ich Fuhls from The Magic Flute, you could even try Violetta from La Traviata. Listen the operas and see if they make sense to you on an intuitive vocal level. Happy hunting.
yogini is right-high soprano and dramatic soprano are two very kettles of fish in the opera world.

To add to her list of legit soprano arias to test out:

"Porgi amor" from The Marriage of Figaro ( Le Nozze di Figaro) by Mozart. It gives you not only some very beautiful music, but it helps consolidate the area where your voice is best "at home", which is what ultimately gives us our category names.

If it seems too heavy, try "Quando m'en vo" which is also from La Boheme by Puccini. It's a snappy, flirty tune, and lies a bit higher.

If these are too high, and you do fit more into the mezzo-soprano category ( in between alto and soprano), look for " Voi che sapete" from The Marriage of Figaro, or "Smanie implacabile" from one of Mozart's other operas Cosi fan Tutte.

By the way, have you ever worked on any of the old Italian arias from the 17th and 18th centuries? these were considered wonderful works, when they first came out, and we mostly use them nowadays for learning purposes. they would provide a good intermediate stage from musical to opera repertory.

Your teacher should know of them.

there are also several well-known aria books available that contain a range of different styles, languages, and composers, at least one for each voice category ( soprano, mezzo, alto, tenor, baritone, bass). You can probably find them easily at your local music store, or the library!

A good reference book to have if someone knows their German, is Rudolph Kloiber's Handbook of Opera. Volume 2 contains a listing of what voice category sings which roles, and this list is still considered a legal reference in Germany. ( As in, if it's not listed in my voice category by Kloiber, I don't have to sing it, even if the general manager insists)

Please go slowly and carefully. There are so many stylistic differences between musical and opera as well as some technical differences to be learned that it doesn't do well to hurry through it all and hurt yourself vocally.

Best wishes and keep on singing
The singer gives good advice.

I would merely add that taking a look at Boris Goldovsky's little book "Bringing Soprano Arias to Life" might be worthwhile. It contains much good, useful information.

If you want to try some "opera" that is not too heavy and that has much in common with musical theater, look at Igor Stravinsky's little opera, Mavra. I think you will find the soprano and alto roles delicious.
As an opera major in college, I found that singing arias and performing in operas were 2 different things. I learned alot of arias, but then began to volunteer for the local opera company. I learned so much! Then, I signed up for every opera workshop class I could find. That really helped too. It is addictive.

Here is the story for your info

http://www.culturevulture.net/Opera/Butt...

(info taken from above website for informational purposes)

Madame Butterfly originated in a story by John Luther Long and was adapted for the stage by David Belasco. The play premiered with great success in New York in 1900, then quickly crossed the Atlantic for a London production where it was seen by Giacomo Puccini. Puccini's first version of the opera failed at La Scala in 1904, but a revised version was successful the same year, the version that we hear today, one of the most frequently produced operas in the entire repertory.

Butterfly is different from many operas. It is intimate, devoid of spectacle, taking place completely within a house in Nagasaki. There is one straight plot line, without subplots. Girl wins boy, girl loses boy, girl commits hara kiri. What makes the piece work are the characterizations of Butterfly and her Captain Pinkerton, both in the drama and in the rich and luscious Puccini score.

From when we first meet Pinkerton, a dashing officer in the United States Navy, it is clear that the man is a philandering heel, infatuated with the fifteen year old Butterfly, cognizant of her fragility, but "not content with life unless he makes his treasure the flowers on every shore." He says as he compares her to a butterfly, "I must pursue her even though I damage her wings."

The stage for the tragedy is set. We meet the beauteous Cio-Cio San, not a complete innocent - she has been a geisha, after all - but nonetheless fragile, unworldly, and in love with the handsome sailor. She deceives herself, despite abundant warnings, as to Pinkerton's motives.

The tale unfolds with well written dialogue, sung to music which captures the feelings of love and yearning and pain, raising the entire experience into the realm of great art, transcendently moving. This simple plot provides the vehicle for the arias of love and loss and hope and despair, the stuff of which the very best operatic music is made.

CV most recently heard Butterfly live at a San Francisco Opera production, a production made worthwhile by the fine dramatic interpretation of soprano Catherine Malfitano. We have just watched the newly released video of the 1995 filmed version from French director Frederic Mitterrand, starring Chinese soprano Ying Huang and tenor Richard Troxell. The singing is fine, the soundtrack quality is first rate. Mitterrand has opened up the visuals with some scenic shots, nicely unforced. His skillful camera placements allow changing vantages for viewing the interpersonal reactions of the leads, particularly effective in the ensemble numbers. There is one jarring, inexplicable note, when Mitterand has Cio-Cio San's uncle, a priest who comes to curse her for giving up her religion for the American, appear out of the sky, like a spirit, instead of the very real figure in the libretto.

CV has seen more Butterflys over the years than he can count. So long as this opera is well sung, we will go back again and again. It still is fully capable, as the video proved again, of drawing tears.

- Arthur
Go as Amadeus....do a google search and several sights will have photos......but you got to have his hair!
Well, it's too bad you won't go the Diva route. I suggest you Google images of Figaro (character in, I think, two Mozart operas). You could go with the Viking look and be Siegfried from Wagner's Ring Cycle. Also Google images of "The Barber of Seville" and "Rigoletto". Then, head out to Goodwill or another second-hand clothes store because you will probably be able to find some stuff that you can work with to create your costume.

What the hell is wrong with opera?!?!?

What is wrong with opera. Y'know how at the top of the webbrowser it has the file, edit, view, history things right. opera is missing that! how do i fix this. i uninstalled opera because this happened but when i reinstalled it it came back up like that. how do i fix this?

What the hell is wrong with opera?!?!?microsoft internet explorer

I'm not sure what you mean to say, do you mean to say opera is missing the menu bar, or do you mean to say it is missing some menus on the menu bar?

I think its the latter. However it is possible to toggle the menu bar on/off in opera by assigning a keyboard shortcut to it.

As for the menus missing in the menu bar, this is perhaps because they are missing in the file standard_menu.ini which resides in the defaults subdirectory of the installation directory of opera and in the menu subdirectory of the profile folder of opera when 'modified' . In this file under the 'browser menu bar' section are the menus listed...so i think your menu.ini file is missing those entries...so you'll have to check. I'm not sure whether adding those entries will make this alright, so i suggest you uninstall and reinstall opera but while uninstalling it, remove it entirely , including opera's profile folder(the path to the profile folder can be found by clicking on help -%26gt; about opera. Here under paths, the opera directory is the profile folder). So that way the settings won't be preserved and you can install it fresh again!

I need to know is whether Opera Mini uses one online session per application's session or one online session per each page.

My carrier charges 2 Sri Lankan Rupees per session + 0.02 Rupees per each kilobyte. So the actual thing I want to know is whether Opera Mini or my phone's browser is the cost effective. My phone is not a 'smart' one. ;)

You can use a cracked version of opera mobile 8.50 from mobango.com or www.mobilust.net. from your phone's log you can calculate the amount of data transferred.

How can life be a soap opera?

how is life a soap opera because i think my life is a soap opera.

My g/f caught me kissing another girl today in school(high school) but i did not kiss her, this other girl kissed me and my g/f saw us kissing. she wont believe me that she kissed me and i did not kiss her. I love my g/f alot and i dont want to lose her but everytime i am near this girl, she always tries and jump my bones lol.

so how can life be a soap opera.

How can life be a soap opera?windows firewall

Let her (your gf) cool down a little, then tell her that you're not into the other girl, the one that kissed you, and that you won't see her again, won't talk to or about her. She'll appreciate this. Also tell her something sweet, like "you know you're the only one for me"

How can life be a soap opera?microsoft frontpage internet explorer

tell that slut to stop jumping your bones because you have a girlfriend and you love HER. ;-) your GF is probably more angry that you are not telling this girl off than she is about the actual kiss. if you straighten things out and make sure the other girl knows whats up and then go talk to your girlfriend, i bet she'll be a lot more willing to forgive.
The plot thickens when your other girl decides to kiss your g/f, and your g/f enjoys it and then wants a 3some!!!! IF that happens, I have to say you are a legend, and you are one lucky guy!!!!

Yes, to all the girls reading this, most gus do have a fantasy of 2 women. If a guy has a fantasy of another guy while he's "working" on his lady, then he might be indicating that he wants to "paint both sides of the fence!!!!"

I am not an actor, nor do I play one on tv, but my friends say that I should write and make a movie or tv show. My life has more than a fair share of drama!!!! To all talent agencies that are seeking new talent, please email me!!!!!

Best of luck to you and your dilemma. Don't let it worry you too much, as there are other things more important that are needing your attention.

Talk to your gf and remember, you are young adults, not kids anymore!!!

Opera has it's own built in pop-up blocker. Click tools %26gt; quick preferences %26gt; block all pop-ups.

There are other third party blockers. Some are free, others are shareware or full price. This is just one website that tries to collect them all in one place:

Lifestyle of an opera singer?

Can anyone describe to me life as a professional opera singer, in as much detail as possible? What is it like getting started? What is it like when your career gets into full swing? I want to know all the details :)

I'm thinking of becoming an opera singer myself, so I just want to know what to expect.

Lifestyle of an opera singer?microsoft maps

here in Germany, the style is very different depending on what size opera house you are hired by. If you h ave the great good fortune to be hired by an "A" house ( Berlin, Munich, Cologne, D眉sseldorf, Mannheim, Weimar, Dresden)

you will be thrown into the pool at the deep end- they have shows in performance that run over years, and if you are joining the cast, you will probably have only a few rehearsals before your opening night. Depending on your voice category, you might be triple cast in alot of different operas. thisis where your learned musicianship comes to be a great aid. you won't get many rehearsals with the coach, and the quicker you are at learning notes and text, the easier it will be. There will be lots of people around, ready to give you all sorts of (uneeded) advice and help ( and criticism)

If you are hired by a "B" house or smaller, the pace is much slower, although the work load might not be. ost smaller houses take 6 weeks to prepare a production, and not many are carried over from season to season. Again, you won't get more than 7 or 8 hours of solo coaching, so be prepared to learn in your sleep. Once staging rehearsals start, you will generally be worked to the bone- you will have morning rehearsals from 10 till 2, and then be back on at 6 till 10 at night. For the final production week, you might want to invest in bringing a sleeping bag to the theater ( ok, that's over the top, but there are weeks where you don't know your own apartment or house anymore). Once the show is on the boards, you may get one day off before preparation for the next show begins ( if the musical rehearsals haven't started already) In between will be all the LiederAbende, oratorio concerts, benefits concerts, gala evenings, Opera-in-the-park concerts, etc. that you will do for free. You may put in for a vacation day if you really need it, but they generally limit you to the six-week general holiday in summer. Of course, then there are all the workshops, summer festivals, competitions, etc. that you will want to participate in before you turn 32 ( cut-off age for all except the deep basses. their age limit is all of 35.)

After 2 years, your contract is up for renewal. Don't count on it! You need to go auditioning all over again. ( an agent told me recently that even the agencies don't start accepting singers as marketable soloists until they've reached their third 2-year contract: anyone can have beginner's luck on the first one, there may be a business connection ( or personal one?!?) for the 2nd one, but the third one is a definite sign of artistic marketability)

so, after 2 years of learning to trust the people in your theater, you get to pull up stakes and move elsewhere ( at your own cost) and start all over again. Of course, there are those who come in with such high skills that they are immediately noticed. If you are one of the Chosen, you don't really need to attach yourself to one theater, you can remain free-lance, choosing only those roles that you care to take on. You'll be travelling quite a lot, and will have to decide whether you want/need a permanent residence somewhere. you'll also do without those glorious benefits that you get in a contract job- medical insurance, dental insurance, pension plan, etc. Once you are freelance, you get to take care of this all by yourself. OH, and taxes! As an American citizen working abroad, you will be filling out not only your American tax forms, but German ones as well.

I could carry on for a couple more years with this, but it's a start. ( I've been at the City Theater of Aachen, Germany for 22 years now.)

Lifestyle of an opera singer?windows registry internet explorer

I am a fan of all genres of music including opera. I know three opera singers (2 sopranos and 1 tenor) who are just starting their careers.

Two have completed their University degrees in Bachelor of Performing Arts in Voice and Performance and have graduated with First Class Honours at University. The other is still at Uni completing his Honours degree.

Two are currently in London furthering their studies and career opportunities. One is studying at the Royal Academy of Music and the other is at the Royal College of Music.

It requires long hours of hard work to become an opera singer, as you need to learn lines like an actor and understand music like a composer and sing the highest art form written for the human voice. Sometimes you are required to dance, so you need to take a few dance lessons as well.

It would be strongly advised that you learn a musical instrument as that would add to your musical knowledge and help you sight read quickly and efficiently.

You need to be exposed to all forms of classical music (Romantic, Baroque) and understand how opera is performed. Understand how recitals, oratorios, operas and concerts are performed. Listen to operas on the radio or on DVDs or CDs and go to see operas as often as you can afford to. Some operas are very expensive, but you can go to student operas at the local university.

This is where upcoming and talented young opera singers gain attention and get valuable experience. Never turn your nose down at other genres of music as you need to appreciate and respect pop/rock and jazz to be a great operatic artist.

Most of all, you need to look after your voice, which means no smoking, no drinking alcohol and no dairy as that brings on mucus. No chocolate before performing as that will also bring up mucus. Drink water at room temperature or apple juice or orange juice. Some people don't like orange juice because it's too pulpy.

Some of the best opera stars you can listen to include Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Tito Gobbi, Guiseppi Di Stefano, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and many more. Or just search for them on YouTube.

Hope this helps make up your mind.
I concur with ChameleonGirl. I'm a multigenre musician myself, so I understand what goes on in several musical fields. As I understand things, the Classical music field is a world all by itself, and that is true, in spades, of Opera. Everything the Classical, and especially the Opera, musician does is focused on the most consistent possible delivery of the Composer's intentions, including lifestyle out-of-music.

A previous question I fielded concerned a female pianist-in-training, spec. the use of nail paints, which I understand to be the exception in the Classical music field--it's just another variable to be stabilized or eliminated:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

(Of course, in the Pop/Rock, Country, and Jazz worlds, painted nails are a non-issue.)

In Opera, occasionally the singer-actress needs her nails in a specific color in order to approach the character description for the part she is assigned (somewhat of a rarity, as few Classical- and Romantic-era character descriptions would need it, excepting certain roles in the Giuseppe Verdi tragedy Aida, set during the Golden Age of the Middle Kingdom in Egypt). The cosmetics manufacturers are doing what they can to reduce the VOCs in their enamels and lacquers (not an easy task), a side benefit being reduced exposure to the solvent vapors therein (a non-issue in most manicurists' salons nowadays, as ventilation hoods are necessary to satisfy recent amendments to Code).

Can a soap opera be turned into drama?

What turns drama into a soap opera?windows nt

A soap opera is a drama. Soap operas are also called daytime dramas. A soap can be seen once a week in the evening too. They considered Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing night-time soaps.

A soap opera is an ongoing story that never seems to have an end.

What turns drama into a soap opera?windows 95 internet explorer

bad actors and predictable plots.
Drama is usually the ingredient of a Soap Opera.
tears. and laughs. not all cartoons and reality shows, have tears and laughs. that's what makes it a drama!
They show a new episode every day in the afternoons - the typical audience consists of housewives and the advertisers know this. That's why they are "soap operas" - check out the ads that pay for the programming.

Many soap operas are dramatic - but it's hard to put out good product on a daily basis so that's why you'll see the bad acting and cliched plot lines so often.
A drama is either a one time show or is complete episodes. A soap opera is continuous. While a drama may have continuing story lines, the main story for that episode has a beginning, middle, and end. The soap story line may run for months.
I think what turns a drama into a soap opera is twofold; first, the plausibility of the situation, and secondly, how the characters play it. They both tend to be "just over the top," and with a drama, the situation has to be real to evoke that necessary tension in the viewer.
Oh, no! She use to be married to my grandfather, my father, (I even slept with her once) and now she's marrying my brother. But what she don't knowand what I just found out, is that my brother is also HER brother. Dum,dum,dum......
In order for it to be a soap opera it has to come on daily. As in monday-friday (example Y%26amp;R). In order for it to be a drama it has to come on once a week (example Grey's Anatomy). That's the format used to determine whether it's a soap opera or drama.
Soap Operas are drams, usually better acted then night time shows. The difference is that soaps are generational, following several families over an extended period of time

Soaps can have outlandish plots, but no more so then nighttime dramas, over all the actors are better on soaps managing to do their jobs some 250 days a year and still appear on Broadway and in other media
the stuff that`s in it changes the way and yeah
I am an older person and I do know that soap operas got their name because alot of them were sponsored by soap and soap powder products. This is where the name came from. Soap operas also have continuing story lines, this is why some night sitcoms with on going story lines are called night soap operas.

Popup stopper for Opera?

I have uninstall firefox because it has been crashing a lot lately. I am now using Opera. Does anyone know of a popup stopper I can use for Opera? Most of the popup stopper I came across works only works on IE and Firefox

Popup stopper for Opera?microsoft sql server

All modern web browsers have pop up blockers built in.

Pop up blockers are included with IE7, Firefox, Opera, etc.

If you are using the built in pop up blocker in any of these browsers and you still are plagued with pop ups you do not need another pop up blocker, you need a virus and spyware remover. Your computer is infected! That's probably why Firefox was crashing!

"Some Web pages automatically open new pop-up windows. This is sometimes useful, but often annoying. By default, Opera will block pages from opening pop-up windows without your approval, and this is usually the preferred setting. Select to allow or deny this function completely from Tools %26gt; Preferences %26gt; General %26gt; Pop-ups."

Which do you like better the Opera or Theater? Tell me why???

I have never seen an Opera and this Fall with my friend we will see an Opera at Lincoln Center through my University Fordham :)))I always liked the Theater saw many musicals and plays on Broadway but I have been told the Opera is different???

Which do you like better the Opera or Theater? Tell me why???microsoft xp

Hi Rena,

I love to visit the theatre. I love classical music and some opera but I'm not sure I could sit through a full operatic performance. It's not so easy to understand. My mum used to love watching operas on the TV and she'd try to encourage the kids to take an interest. At least this had subtitles to say what they were singing about. I would go to the theatre ... and have done so ... to listen to an ochestra but the opera doesn't appeal so much.

Pollyanns

Which do you like better the Opera or Theater? Tell me why???download windows xp internet explorer

Well...I would have to choose theater because I have never had a chance to go see and Opera. I have gone to a lot of musicals that I enjoy.
Theatre, even musicals! I love listening to live classical music, I love theatre, but to make the singing the central point about which a drama revolves, just don't do it for me (oh, and generally the language is not one I can comprehend, let alone the costumes :)

Peace
Theater. I'm a music lover but I never could quite get into the operatic style (too pretentious for me) or even the faux operatic style in 'light' opera or musicals.

I like a good play. I like a good concert. To me they don't mix very well because most musicals don't do a very good job of either.
Opera. It combines great music with acting, a great orchestra, usually great art in the set designs and all that drama.

Many art forms, many emotions.
I like the opera...the sleep is fantastic. -_-
Neither.
Lovely interesting question. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a one word answer.

I love both theater and opera, plus musical theater, which you

didn't mention, but which I believe is the bridge between both.

Opera is stylised and limited to a finite number of productions, but is also beautiful and inspiring.

Theater is so far ranging, that you would need a book, to do justice to it.

Live theater is in a class on it's own, and should never be subject to comparison, with any other art form.

Opera, has the ability to set your soul on fire, even when you

are only listening to recordings

Why choose?? Why not embrace both?????????????
Opera, it is beautiful. People either love it or hate it, but few are luke warm about it. I was introduced to opera %26amp; classical music by my mentor. Because I do not understand the language it leaves me free to really hear the control %26amp; nuances these masters have in their ability to sing. It moves me as no other music can, pure emotion conveyed without the words. This is significant coming from a poet who is in love with words.
I prefer theater to opera, although I enjoy both. Opera is a celebration of of music and song based around a dramatic story or premise; theater, to use Shakespeare's description, holds a mirror up to nature, and can reveal, through the make-believe of the actors and the words of the playwright, a vicarious glimpse of ourselves, our hearts and souls, and the hearts and souls of others which otherwise we might overlook.
I have never been to either of them, but I would like to see a Broadway show. I haven't been to excited about Opera, so I more than likely will never go to one.
I have been to theater several times and really like it. Only saw an opera as I was passing by and it reminded me of my friend singing in the church choir. BTW she is that good.
Hi Rena, I prefer Theatre then opera.I have been to both thou.A few theatres in London.A rewarding experience indeed.
If you are going to Fordham, then you really should go see Netrebko and Villazon at the Met!!!!!! We are Met subscribers (8 operas + a year), so I guess you could say I prefer opera. My husband is much longer time fan of the opera (50 years), but I love it too.

Addition: Last season they got a grant which allowed them to sell up to 200 orchestra tickets at a lot of performances for $20 each. These are tickets worth more than $100 each. People just lined up an hour before the performance to get them.

What was that opera song in that old car commercial?

there was 2 cars passing by each other, one had this opera song, the other this rap song when they passed by each other the songs mixed in together- the opera song went something like this "da da dadud- da da da dadud- dadud dud dada de dudud da-dudud" its a famous song but i dont know the name of it, i think its italian
