Sad opera to a dying child?

Can anyone help me find a sad opera that would be appropriate for a father to sing to a dying child? It is for a production I am working on. Thanks.

A whole opera? All by himself? that would kill the kid for sure. Probably the father too, after a couple hours of singing all the parts.

The problem with opera is a) children don't die in them all that often b) when they do, it's usually the moher singing. But in Puccini's Madama Butterfly (Act II, p. 219 in the Schirmer vocal score), there's a little lullaby that Butterfly sings to her baby. The baby isn't dying; Butterfly does that, an act later. But it might work.

Sorry, not an opera, but the Pavane for a Dead Princess by Ravel. Best I could do.

Ravelinsky
'Dead Boy's Poem' by Nightwish. Nightwish is a symphonic metal band, however most of their songs are part of the opera-genre.

It's really sad...you should listen to it =(

Here's the lyrics (in the beginning, it has the boy whispering words such as, "I'm Sorry...". I don't understand why they're not part of the lyrics, but meh):

Born from silence, silence full of it

A perfect concert my best friend

So much to live for, so much to die for

If only my heart had a home

Sing what you can`t say

Forget what you can`t play

Hasten to drown into beautiful eyes

Walk within my poetry, this dying music

-My loveletter to nobody

Never sigh for better world

It`s already composed, played and told

Every thought the music I write

Everything a wish for the night

Wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin

Died for the beauty the one in the garden

Created a kingdom, reached for the wisdom

Failed in becoming a god

Never sigh...

" If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it

Remember only the verse, songmaker`s cry the one without tears

For I`ve given this its strength and it has become my only strength.

Comforting home, mother`s lap, chance for immortality

where being wanted became a thrill I never knew

The sweet piano writing down my life"

"Teach me passion for I fear it`s gone

Show me love, hold the lorn

So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me

I`m sorry

Time will tell (this bitter farewell)

I live no more to shame nor me nor you

And you... I wish I didn`t feel for you anymore... "

A lonely soul An ocean soul
You have to listen to this all the way through (Itunes), it sounds like it will fit your description well. The name is:

"King Arthur: Act V: Duet: You Say 'tis Love"

Its about two lovers and it fits your description because it contains the lines "you think I can bear the wounds from which you die. also its also in English another plus, sorry for the haste from which I speak
